About the 2022 WNY LGBTQ+ Community Needs Survey...

Western New York (WNY) is home to a diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) community. WNY is made up of eight counties: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans, and Wyoming. Our community is resilient and resourceful, yet continues to be disproportionately affected by a range of physical health, sexual health, mental health, legal, housing, and political issues. Our needs are not only overlooked, but often exacerbated by structural institutions.

In 2021, Niagara Pride conducted a similar survey exclusively for Niagara County. The overall purpose of this survey was to gather information that will help meet the needs of LGBTQ+ people not just in Niagara County, but in the entirety WNY, especially the smaller, underrepresented counties. Niagara Pride will use the results to develop programming and events within Niagara County and WNY.

The goal of this survey was to learn more about:

  1. what the community knows about the local services available in WNY

  2. what services they use

  3. how comfortable they feel accessing and utilizing those services

  4. what, if any, barriers exist that prohibit or hinder accessing those services

The survey asked participants about their:

  • opinion about the most important issues facing you and your community right now

  • experiences trying to get help for various concerns in your life

  • feelings of physical and emotional safety in various aspects of your life, as well as your feelings of connection to the community

112 individuals responded with participants located in Erie, Niagara, Chautauqua, Genesee, Orleans, Cattaraugus, and Wyoming counties. 32 individuals from Niagara County responded. 1 participant was removed from analysis for clear transphobic and homophobic answers.
